Types of wall mounts
- Fixed mount: This standard stationary mount allows a flat-screen TV to be attached to the wall to flatter the sleek thin lines of the model. Since these mounts can’t be adjusted to any angle, they should be used when the TV needs to be positioned close to the wall or at a fixed height.
- Tilting mount: This mount allows the TV to be tilted up and down for better viewing. Only the vertical angle of the mount can be adjusted. These TV mounts are recommended to avoid interfering reflections from windows or other lighting during TV viewing.
- Slim mount: The slim mount, like the fixed mount, leaves almost negligible space between the back of the TV and the wall. However, it comes in two varieties - fixed and tilting.
- Full-motion mount: The best option for most homes, this TV mount can extend, retract, tilt, and swivel in all directions. This is ideal for multiple viewing positions and for installing a TV in spaces where it is difficult to mount a TV.
- Cantilever mount: This mount comes with a retractable arm that allows a dynamic and multiple positioning of the TV, both horizontally and vertically.
- Under-cabinet mount: This space-saving mount is apt for installing small screen TVs in kitchens and cubicles as well as under cabinets.
- Platform mount: This mount is meant for older, small-screen TVs, not flat screens. These are very often used in hospital rooms.
Tips to mount a TV on the wall
- Choose the right bracket: Homeowners can choose a suitable bracket from the aforementioned list. Knowing the VESA measurement of the TV helps with this decision. This measurement, usually mentioned in the instructions manual, measures the distance between the threaded screw holes on the back of the TV. If not found in the manual, this can be measured with tape.
- Decide the location: Choosing the spot for the TV mounting will help decide the kind of wall mount that needs to be purchased.
- Attach the bracket to the TV: Use the bolts provided in the mounting kit to attach the mounting arms into the mounting holes at the back of the TV. Don’t over-tighten them, and do not use the drill on the TV.
- Mount the bracket to the wall: Locate the studs in the wall with a stud finder. Mark the locations on the wall with a pencil and drill to attach the wall bracket plate. Screw the bolts provided in the wall mount kit.
- Connect the cables: Depending on the wall mount chosen, homeowners will need to creatively hide the cables from view. This task is the easiest with a fixed wall mount. This step, however, may require the assistance of another person as one holds the TV while the other person connects the cables.
- Place the TV: The final placing of the TV requires two people to avoid any TV damage. As one person interlocks the brackets, the other person should hold the TV. The TV should be safely locked in at every connection point.
- Test: All the connections must be checked to ensure the TV is working smoothly. A few adjustments can be made by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Note: Do not mount the TV on metal studs as they would fail to bear the weight of the TV, leading to loss and damage.
